Why now?
We studied the problem.

The world needs reliable, firm power more urgently than ever. Electricity demand is surging, the grid cannot expand fast enough, and the available fallback options are often dirty, noisy, costly, or slow to deploy. At the same time, clean energy has never been cheaper — but without a better way to move, store, and deliver it, too much of that energy remains out of reach.

We chose the fuel.

We looked for an energy carrier that could work in the real world: dense, abundant, safe, durable, affordable, and easy to move. Aluminum kept winning. It stores more energy per liter than diesel, ships as ordinary freight, and can sit stable for years without degrading. It also has the potential to be regenerated from its byproduct, creating the foundation for a more circular fuel system.

We saw the timing.

The pieces are now in place. Battery and fuel cell investment have advanced electrochemical hardware, power electronics, controls, and manufacturing. A generation of engineers has learned how to scale complex energy systems. And new advances in aluminum regeneration are opening the door to lower-cost, more efficient metal fuels.

We took action.

Voya moved from napkin sketch to working cell at target performance in twelve months. We developed new chemistry, built a new system architecture, assembled a team of serious hardware builders, and secured the funding to scale a new category of clean power.

The thesis takes shape.

Voya uncovers hidden potential in metal fuels with Energy Impact Partners, and conceptual design begins for a new electrochemical cell.

2025
Voya comes alive.

Voya raises a $13M Seed round, builds its lab, and tests a novel cell architecture that produces first electricity.

2026
Beyond the lab.

Voya raises a $35M Series A, scales cells 30x, tests full stacks, and opens a 28,000 sq ft pilot factory.

2027
From stack to system.

Voya scales stacks and systems another 30x as  containerized generators powered by aluminum are built and deployed.

2028
Voya powers the future.

Voya powers its first customers with aluminum. Cell, stack, and balance-of-plant hardware are finalized for commercial launch.

2029
Commercial scaling.

Voya launches commercially, begins powering critical infrastructure, and starts construction on its first generator gigafactory.

2030
Voya unlocks the Aluminum Era.

Gigafactory production ramps as deployments reach hundreds of megawatts, and Voya begins construction on its first aluminum fuel plant.

Richard Wang
Chief Executive Officer

Richard Wang is Chief Executive Officer of Voya Energy and a repeat founder in advanced energy. Before co-founding Voya, he founded and led Cuberg, the lithium-metal battery company spun out of Stanford and later acquired by Northvolt, scaling the business to 225 employees and establishing Northvolt’s Silicon Valley advanced technology center. He also advised battery and mobility companies and energy investors on fundraising, go-to-market strategy, diligence, and business planning, bringing a rare mix of deep technical credibility, company-building experience, and capital strategy to Voya’s next stage of growth.

Matt Horton
Chief Commercial Officer

Matt Horton is Chief Commercial Officer of Voya Energy and brings decades of experience commercializing breakthrough energy and transportation platforms. He previously served as CEO of Voltera, where he helped build a leading EV charging infrastructure business, as EVP of Energy and Charging Solutions at Rivian, and as Chief Commercial Officer at Proterra, where he led sales, marketing, financing, and customer service during a period of rapid market expansion. Earlier in his career, he was CEO of Propel Fuels and worked in venture investing across cleantech and advanced materials, giving him exceptional depth in scaling commercial organizations in emerging energy markets.

Steven Kaye
Chief Technology Officer

Steven Kaye is Chief Technology Officer of Voya Energy and brings more than two decades of leadership in battery technology, advanced materials, and R&D-driven product development. Prior to Voya, he served as CTO of Our Next Energy, Vice President of Engineering at Refractal, Head of Advanced Materials at Apple, and Chief Scientific Officer at Wildcat Discovery Technologies. A Ph.D. chemist from UC Berkeley, Steven has led breakthrough materials and battery programs across startups and major technology companies and holds more than 60 patents spanning battery-related innovations.

Matt Lehman
Vice President of Engineering

Matt Lehman is Vice President of Engineering at Voya Energy and brings 25+ years of experience scaling high-performance engineering organizations and executing complex technical programs. He most recently served as VP of Engineering at X-Bow Systems, where he helped scale the engineering team from 75 to 180, and previously held leadership roles at Astra, Vicarious/Intrinsic, and SpaceX. His background leading propulsion, systems integration, and cross-functional engineering execution in demanding aerospace environments makes him especially well suited to drive Voya’s transition from breakthrough technology to dependable commercial systems.

Scott Fisher
Vice President of Business Development

Scott Fisher is Vice President of Business Development at Voya Energy and has spent more than a decade building and scaling clean transportation and energy infrastructure businesses. He previously led commercial development at Prologis Mobility, served as Senior Vice President at Voltera where he built and led the sales and origination team behind hundreds of millions of dollars in EV charging hub contracts, and held senior commercial roles at Greenlots and EVgo. Earlier, he led alternative energy initiatives at NRG, including vehicle-to-grid, EV infrastructure, and distributed energy partnerships, giving him deep experience in complex partnerships, project origination, and market development.

Head of People & Talent

Brooke Self joins Voya Energy as Head of People & Talent, bringing a proven track record of scaling venture-backed deep tech companies from early stage through hypergrowth and IPO. She has built and led people and talent functions at companies including Electric Hydrogen, Canoo and Virgin Galactic. Across these organizations, Brooke has built talent acquisition and people operations functions from the ground up, with a focus on scaling technical, manufacturing, and executive hiring in highly competitive talent markets. At Electric Hydrogen, she helped scale the organization from 0 to 400 employees in 2.5 years from Series A through C, and at Canoo from 0 to 600+ employees in 3 years from Series A through IPO. At Voya Energy, Brooke will play a critical role in scaling the organization to execute on its ambitious goals through the next phase of expansion.

Rizwan Dard
Chief of Staff

Alex Vai
Head of Product

Alex Vai is Head of Product at Voya Energy and brings deep experience translating breakthrough battery technology into product development. Prior to Voya, he spent nearly a decade at Ambri, where he most recently served as EVP of Technology and led development of the company’s battery cell product. During his tenure, he helped achieve a 75%+ reduction in high-volume cost and more than a 5x increase in energy density relative to first commercial prototypes, while leading cross-functional work to retire technical risk and support a successful $150 million investment round. As Ambri’s first technical hire, he also helped establish the company’s early technical foundation, including proof-of-concept validation, R&D infrastructure, and early team buildout—experience that positions him well to lead Voya’s product development as the company scales.
